European port congestion escalates, freight volume soars 446%!

According to foreign media reports, European freight volume increased by 446% year-on-year in January , while British freight volume decreased by 49% . The main reason for this phenomenon is Brexit.

As traffic in and out of the European Union will require additional customs and other checks after Brexit , hauliers have been using services between Rosslare, Dunkirk and Cherbourg in France to avoid Landbridge in the UK.

In addition, since January 1 , a new direct route has been opened between Rosslare and the European continent to meet "unprecedented demand", which has also led to an increase in European freight volume, while British freight has not increased but decreased. At the same time, the epidemic situation in European countries has also affected European freight to a certain extent.

Glenn Carr, general manager of Rosslare Europort, described the growth in traffic as sensational and the demand as staggering. The continued growth in freight volume has caused increasing congestion at European ports, and out-of-stock problems have stumped many European sellers.

In order to cope with the growing demand for freight and ease the congestion in Europe, major European ports have begun to take action. Roslar European Port is an important port in Europe , with up to 30 routes between Roslar and Europe every week . The port is constantly seeking cooperation with shipping companies to find more opportunities to meet market demand.

Rosslare Europort is currently preparing for redevelopment based on a €35 million masterplan that will improve access, while a new checkpoint outside the port for customs, health and agricultural checks has been operational since January 1, serving trade from the UK.

Since January 2, the number of direct European sailings from Roslaar Europort has increased from five to 15 per week, with 30 services between Roslaar and the Spanish port of Bilbao and between Cherbourg and Dunkirk for Stena Line, Brittany Ferries and DFDS.

In addition, in response to the epidemic, the port has also accelerated the progress of nucleic acid testing for truck drivers. Last Thursday, the first batch of temporary testing centers for commercial drivers opened in Gorey and Dublin . More "drive-through" testing centers will be opened in Cork and Shannon . A testing center for truck drivers will also be opened in Holmestown outside Wexford town in the next few days .
