4.7 million units of a single product sold out, a big hit: even a huge sales volume is hard to bear

"Start from the cradle", and thus a popular track was born. A group of big sellers took advantage of this trend to play with their products in order to earn more market share, but at the same time, overseas departments always have strict supervision on products for this group of people, and many sellers have fallen into trouble.

Recall refunds nearly $55 million

Not long ago, Fisher-Price, a major overseas baby products brand, was notified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ( CPSC) to recall nearly 2.2 million baby swing products, with the recall number 25-009.

According to the recall announcement, CPSC requires Fisher-Price to recall all models of Snuga swings it has sold, including 21 models: BGB32, CCF38, CHM56, CHM69, CHM76, CHM78, DRG43, FKL21, GJB53, GKH44, GNG38, GNG40, GVF83, HBM23, HDY10, HGX49, V0099, W9510, X7051, X7345, X7347 , and any seat pads that can replace the above product models.

Between 2012 and 2022, five babies aged 1 to 3 months were reported to have died while sleeping with the product. In most cases, consumers used the product without adding certain protective measures to infants and young children.

Therefore, CPSC believes that the swing should not be used by infants and young children for sleeping, and no bedding should be added. If the product is used for sleeping or bedding is added, the headrest and bracket inserted in the seat cushion will increase the risk of suffocation.

From 2010 to January this year, the above-mentioned products were sold through platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, Toys R Us , Target , etc., at a price of about US$160. Approximately 2.1 million pieces were sold in the United States , approximately 99,000 pieces were sold in Canada, and approximately 500 pieces were sold in Mexico, totaling approximately 2.1995 million pieces .

At present, in addition to the recall, CPSC also requires the brand Fisher-Price to refund consumers and repair the product. It is reported that CPSC calls on consumers to immediately remove the headrest (by cutting the tether) and support pad from the seat cushion before continuing to use the swing; Fisher-Price needs to provide a $25 refund to consumers who have repaired the product as required. Based on the above sales, Fisher-Price may have to bear a refund of $54.9875 million .

The CPSC said that infants and young children should not be put to sleep with this product, and blankets or other materials should not be added to the swing. Parents and caregivers should not use any reclining seat products for infants to sleep, such as swings, slides, pacifiers and rocking chairs, and should not leave infants in these products without supervision and restraint.

It is understood that in 2022, the US Congress enacted the Infant Safe Sleep Act, prohibiting the use of infant reclining sleepers.

A single product was recalled twice, with 4.7 million units

This is not the first time that Fisher-Price has been recalled by the CPSC .

In August this year , the dumbbell toy model GJD49 in the Fisher-Price children's gift set Baby Biceps was recalled because the gray cover at the end of the toy might fall off, causing suffocation to infants and young children . The recall number is 24-351.

While no injuries have been reported, Fisher-Price has received seven reports of the ends of the dumbbells detaching from the product.

From April 2020 to August 2024, the products in question were sold at a price of US$18 in the United States on platforms and stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Kohls , with a total of approximately 366,200 units sold and approximately 37,900 units sold in Canada , for a total of approximately 404,100 units .

The CPSC said that consumers can get a $10 refund after handling the product in question according to the instructions . In other words, Fisher-Price needs to bear a refund of $4.041 million in this recall .

In March this year , Fisher-Price's dolls Donald Duck and Daisy, which were co-produced with popular animation IPs, were recalled. The models were HPJ88 and HTW75, and the recall number was 24-167.

From May 2023 to February 2024, the above products were sold at a price of approximately US$20 through online and offline channels such as Amazon, Walmart, Kohls, Meijer, HEB and Kroger. Approximately 204,000 units were sold in the United States and approximately 11,000 units were sold in Canada .

From the time the products were launched to the time they were recalled, Fisher-Price has received three reports of Donald Duck or Daisy Duck doll heads falling off, including one report of a detached head being put into the mouth of a young child. No injuries have been reported so far.

Consumers can get a $10 refund after returning the dolls in question , and Fisher-Price has refunded a total of $2.15 million in this recall .

In January last year , Fisher-Price also experienced a very large-scale recall incident. At that time, all models of its Rock'n Play sleep beds were required to be recalled, with the recall number being 23-088.

It is understood that a recall notice for this product was issued as early as December 2019. At that time, Fisher-Price had received more than 30 reports of deaths due to accidents caused by unattended babies while they were sleeping. After the recall, about 70 additional deaths were reported, including at least 8 deaths that occurred when the initial recall notice was issued.

As of the recall report in January last year, approximately 100 babies had died while using the product. Of course, Fisher-Price also pointed out that it was impossible to confirm that the specific circumstances of the accidents were all due to the use of the Rock'n Play sleep bed.

The products were sold through online and offline channels such as Amazon, Walmart, and Target from 2009 to 2019 at prices ranging from US$40 to US$149. As of the latest recall report, approximately 4.7 million products had been sold .

The CPSC requires Fisher-Price to provide consumers with refunds or vouchers and prohibits the sale or distribution of the product.

Strict control in multiple markets

As a leading brand in the infant and toddler market, Fisher-Price has been recalled many times, and the more it sells, the more recalls it has, and the greater the losses it suffers.

But it's not just leading brands like Fisher-Price. Overseas markets have never relaxed their supervision of infant products, so recalls are also very frequent. It can be seen from multiple official websites that the probability of products for infants and young children being recalled is very high. The categories are not limited to toys, home furnishings, clothing, etc., and are not limited to local platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, and eBay. It is not just the CPSC that is recalling .

The CPSC has announced a recall of children's pajama sets sold exclusively by Fashion Online in Temu due to violations of federal flammability standards, posing a risk of burns . The recall involves eight different styles of children's two-piece pajama sets.

Between October 2022 and May 2024, approximately 45,300 units of this series of products were sold on Temu at a price of approximately US$23 . Consumers can contact the brand for a full refund after handling the products in question in accordance with regulations .

In October, the Spanish Alliance for Child Road Safety ( AESVi) issued a warning, prohibiting e-commerce platforms such as Wallapop, Milanuncios, eBay, Amazon, and Aliexpress from selling child safety seats that meet the old ECE R44 standard . Only child safety seats that meet the new standard ECE R129/i can be legally traded.

In the same month, Health Canada announced a recall of Nautica Boys two-piece children's clothing ( model number 1071750 ) sold at Costco and Amazon due to the possible presence of mold . The product sold over 5,300 pieces in just one week .

Also in October, due to safety concerns , the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission ( CCPC) announced the recall of two children's products sold on Amazon and other platforms. The products were the Kids Travel Pillow47Qchomee children's car pillow and the Nicole Day children's car pillow ( models 151502, 151504 and 151505 ) .

In September, the UK Office of Product Safety and Standards ( OPSS) issued a warning that Pixel Party and Pixel Products branded themed latex balloons sold on Amazon and eBay may contain carcinogenic chemicals , posing a serious risk to children . The product was recalled as it did not comply with the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
