20,000 Amazon workers may strike on Cyber Monday

On Monday local time, the Spanish trade union CCOO called on 20,000 warehouse and delivery workers at Amazon's local subsidiaries to strike for one hour per shift on November 27 to demand higher wages and improved working conditions.

As we all know, November 27th is a very important shopping event for e-commerce platforms: Cyber Monday.

It is understood that Amazon warehouses in Spain are divided into three shifts every day, namely morning, noon and evening.

Douglas Harper, the union's general secretary for Amazon, told the media: "This strike is significant, but it is just the first step and we will consider taking more actions in the future."

It is reported that the CCOO union is the largest union of the American retailer in Spain, and its purpose of calling for a strike is to hope that Amazon can improve job safety issues and admit that there are safety risks in its warehouses in Spain.

In addition, the union also hopes that Amazon can increase the number of human resources staff and increase the basic salary of employees, arguing that the current salary is not proportional to the workload of employees.

"Our employees across Spain already work in safe and modern environments with competitive wages and benefits," a local Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.

Cyber Monday, the first working day after Thanksgiving, is an important day for retailers as consumers return to work and begin ordering Christmas gifts.

Even though Thanksgiving is not a big deal in European countries as they do not celebrate it, Amazon still offers discounts and special deals similar to those in the US.

From the current situation, Amazon logistics workers on both sides of the Atlantic are complaining about working conditions, and unions are beginning to put pressure on Amazon. Earlier this month, a group of workers in the UK went on strike, even though Amazon had just raised wages in October.
