Amazon has been working on drone delivery services for a while, but now may need to reevaluate its strategy.
While the service serves several homes in Rockfield, California, and College Station, Texas, it has completed just 100 deliveries since launching in late December , compared with the company's previous forecast of 10,000 deliveries by 2023 .
Amazon's drone business faces many obstacles, perhaps the biggest of which is regulation by relevant government departments .
Although Amazon is approved as an FAA Part 135 air carrier, this approval comes with a number of restrictions. In addition, Amazon's latest drone model, the MK27-2 , has not been approved by the FAA because Amazon could not provide proof that it can operate safely .
So far, while the entire drone delivery industry has been slow to develop , Amazon 's progress seems to be even worse than its competitors . Zipline , a competitor in the same industry, had completed 600,000 deliveries as of mid -May this year , while DroneUp, a drone delivery partner of Walmart that laid off employees last week , said it had completed 110,000 deliveries as of last month .
