New research suggests that UK shoppers will spend £1.7 billion over the 2022 Easter period, up 4.2% on last year.
Global Data recently asked 2,000 UK adults about their Easter plans and found that 31% said they expected to spend more this year than in the previous two years.
Easter is an important Western festival, which falls on the first Sunday after the full moon on the spring equinox every year. This year's Easter falls on April 17.
Zoe Mills, senior retail analyst at GlobalData, said that while Easter 2021 is indeed up compared to 2020, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 marks the first time that friends and family will have the opportunity to celebrate Easter without restrictions, and trade volumes will far exceed 2021.
This year may be the first year that Easter trade returns to more normal shopping patterns after the COVID-19 pandemic. With offline stores closed, trade had to quickly move online, which also brought huge dividends to e-commerce platforms.
Easter is a great holiday marketing opportunity, and sellers need to prepare and plan their products in advance.
According to GlobalData Retail’s Easter intentions survey, 30.8% of UK consumers said they intend to spend time with family at the event, meaning consumers will be interested in complementary categories such as decorations and tableware.
Meanwhile, food is also one of the key commodities for Easter trade. The continued shift in UK consumers’ eating habits has led many consumers to stay away from dairy and gluten, which has encouraged sellers to increase the level of vegetarian and vegan-free Easter eggs and dark chocolate options when selecting products. Although chocolate Easter eggs are a staple of the event, 40.1% of shoppers plan to look for healthier alternatives this year .
In addition, according to some survey results, young consumers have stronger purchasing power. Therefore, when selecting Easter products, sellers can try to cater to the preferences of young consumers. For example, toys, games, interesting costumes and Easter baskets for food, and of course, holiday artworks and handicrafts are also among the consumption preferences of young people.
