Recently, according to foreign media reports, the value of Dutch e-commerce in 2021 was 30.6 billion euros. Compared with 2020 , it increased by 16% . In addition, the proportion of online spending by Dutch consumers in total spending also rose to 31% , and the number of online purchases reached 373 million times .
The data comes from the annual Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor e-commerce study conducted by Thuiswinkel.org, the Dutch national e-commerce association . It shows that the growth of online spending in the Netherlands in 2021 was even stronger .
This is also reflected in the share of online spending in consumer spending, which reached 13% in 2021 , up from 11% in 2020.
The report also showed that the Dutch bought a lot of products online in the first quarter, up 43% compared to the same period in 2020. In the second and third quarters, the growth rate dropped to 5% and 8% respectively, but contracted by 1% in the fourth quarter.
On the other hand, spending on online services fell 52% in the first quarter but grew 63% in the fourth quarter, a result of the easing of travel restrictions in the second quarter.
Online spending on travel packages ( +42%), flights and accommodation (+33%), and tickets to attractions and events (+32%) grew the most. Garden DIY, insurance, and sports and leisure sectors declined.
In absolute terms, the services sector is still below pre-pandemic levels, with spending on online services in the Netherlands amounting to 7.8 billion euros in 2021, compared to 10.8 billion euros in 2019. However, the sector has been on an upward trend again since the fourth quarter, and Thuiswinkel.org expects this growth to continue into 2022, with spending on online services exceeding 2019 levels.
Thuiswinkel.org said: " This year consumers have once again made more online purchases. The average total amount spent online by consumers has also increased: from 1,900 euros to 2,180 euros, an increase of 15%, which shows that consumers are accustomed to spending more and more money online. It is expected that consumers will continue to buy online this year, but the growth will once again take on the form of the pre-coronavirus pandemic. "
But it is worth noting that about 90% of online consumption is carried out on Dutch websites , and e-commerce giants such as Amazon do not have a high share in the local market. In addition, almost one-third of purchases are completed via smartphones, and the most popular payment method in the Netherlands is still iDEAL. Netherlands E-commerce Europe |
