Sustainable ideas are on the rise, and eco-friendly gifts are quietly becoming popular in the UK

As the concept of sustainable development gradually takes root in people's minds, more and more consumers will consider green environmental protection as a major reference factor when choosing products. In the coming Christmas, green and environmentally friendly Christmas gifts are quietly popular among British consumers.

According to research from American Express, the average UK shopper is expected to spend nearly £80 on sustainable gifts this year . When asked why, more than half of respondents said it was doing the right thing for the planet, while a third said there were better second-hand and sustainable gift options available this year .

In terms of purchasing channels , a quarter of Christmas gift buyers plan to buy from second-hand shops or vintage stores ; more than three-quarters of Brits will buy from smaller independent retailers. In addition , some popular online shopping sites such as Etsy, Depop and Vinted look likely to profit from this trend.

Manhattan Associates, a supply chain consulting firm , said that consumers' concerns about the environment and supply chain shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled the trend of consumers choosing sustainable gifts . He also said : "The value of independent retailers has been emphasized throughout the epidemic , and it is gratifying to see that consumers intend to continue to choose to buy from them during the countdown to Christmas . "

The British Heart Foundation is also urging more shoppers to consider buying eco-friendly or second-hand Christmas gifts. Its retail director Alison Swain Hughes explained that they are selling their donations online through Depop and eBay , and also called on some parents to donate their children's toys that they are tired of to them for recycling.

"People are ready to spend big on the second-hand market , " said Roanne Ta, owner of Clara's Box , a second-hand clothing website. Roanne Ta sells vintage clothing, antique books and rare items on her website . In the run-up to Christmas, many consumers buy these items and plan to give them to friends as Christmas gifts.

In addition, Lego, Mobi, Baby Dragon World series dolls , as well as second-hand balance bikes purchased from the second-hand market or social media have become popular choices for preparing Christmas gifts for children this year.
