Facebook officially changes its name to Meta, moving towards the metaverse!

This Thursday, US time, Facebook officially announced that it would change its company name to Meta.

Facebook announced this decision at its 2021 "Facebook Connect Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality" conference, where the word Meta comes from the science fiction term meta verse.

Facebook's name change shows its vision for future development in the field of virtual reality and also reflects its grand blueprint for development in areas beyond social media.

When announcing the new name, Facebook said it would change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, effective December 1. Facebook also acquired the Meta.com website and the @Meta Twitter account.

Zuckerberg mentioned at the conference that although Facebook is now known as a social media platform, it is essentially a company that connects users through technology. The Metaverse is the next frontier for the company's development, just like when Facebook first started building a social network.

It is understood that Facebook announced in July this year the establishment of a team dedicated to the research and development of the Metaverse, and two months later announced that it would appoint Andrew Boz Bosworth, currently the head of the hardware department, as Chief Technology Officer in 2022.

In addition, the company also mentioned in its third-quarter financial report released on Monday that starting from the fourth quarter, Reality Labs will be separated into an independent department.

Facebook has been investing heavily in hardware over the past few years , launching a range of Portal video calling devices, Ray-Ban Stories glasses, and various versions of the Oculus virtual reality headset, suggesting that augmented and virtual reality will be a key component of Facebook's strategy over the next few years.

It is reported that Facebook's name change is similar to Google's reorganization in 2015. Facebook's businesses will be further subdivided, and its core business units with relatively good financial conditions will be separated from those that require long-term investment and cannot get returns in the short term, which will be more conducive to the development of the company.

When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connected, and apps like Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp enabled billions of people around the world to connect. Now, there is no doubt that Meta will push social technology to the next level in terms of augmented and virtual reality, beyond the traditional screen dimensions.
