In order to relieve the loneliness and anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and home quarantine, the number and frequency of people participating in camping and traveling have increased significantly. In the open outdoors, people can maintain a safe distance and escape from confined spaces to breathe fresh air. In the United States, many people also take advantage of weekends or short holidays to have a picnic and camping with relatives and friends.

 

According to data from the American Outdoor Foundation, the number of people participating in outdoor activities in the United States has increased steadily by more than 3% each year over the past three years. However, in 2020, the number of Americans aged 6 and above who participated in an outdoor recreational activity surged to 160 million, with a penetration rate of 52.9%. 2020 was the year with the fastest penetration rate increase in recent years. Among them, the number of hikers in the United States in 2020 increased by 8.1 million compared with 2019, and the number of camping vacations increased by 7.9 million year-on-year. In addition, it is autumn now, with clear and pleasant weather, which makes Americans more and more enthusiastic about outdoor camping and outdoor adventure activities.

 

The surge in the number of people participating in outdoor activities has directly led to an explosive growth in the demand for outdoor products, which has also made the outdoor equipment industry very prosperous. According to eBay's search and sales data from April to May 2021, sales of beach volleyballs on eBay increased by 190% year-on-year, and bocce balls also increased in the past year; sales of beverage ice buckets increased by 59% month-on-month, and sales of beach tents more than doubled.

 

During the pandemic , people have higher requirements for the hygiene and safety of outdoor drinking water . Therefore, in addition to general outdoor products such as tents and backpacks, water purifiers are also a must-have item for outdoor activities for American consumers. And as Americans spend more time and schedule on outdoor activities, the demand for water purifiers is also rising.

 

According to a survey by NPD Group, from January to July 2021, sales of water purifiers increased by 56% compared with the same period in 2019, and sales increased by 32% compared with the same period in 2020, reaching US$82.7 million. According to Google's search trends, searches related to water purifiers in the United States have fluctuated upward in the past three months, with the largest increase in September.


In this category , the top three leading brands are Lifestraw, Sawyer and Katadyn. Outdoor enthusiasts prefer small and easy-to-carry filters . Therefore, Sawyer's mini filters performed well, with sales not only increasing significantly compared to 2020, but also nearly tripling from January to July 2019. MSR's Trailshot water purifier sales also doubled compared to the same period in 2019.

 

At present, the global epidemic is gradually under control, and people's demand and opportunities for outdoor activities have increased significantly, and the demand for outdoor products has also increased accordingly. As one of the world's manufacturing centers, China has good epidemic control effects and obvious supply chain advantages, and the export volume of outdoor products has grown rapidly. Therefore, for sellers, water purifiers and other outdoor essential products are also a very marketable product selection type and direction.
