With 6.736 million users, 9 e-commerce platforms are competing for the Indonesian market

The Indonesian Ministry of Communications once stated that Indonesia's e-commerce transactions have experienced very significant growth for three consecutive years , and the volume of e-commerce transactions increased significantly from 2018 to 2020.

In 2018, Indonesia's transaction volume reached 40 million, then reached 80 million in 2019, and experienced a very sharp growth in 2020, with the transaction volume even reaching 140 million.

The growth of e-commerce in Indonesia has undoubtedly been affected by the epidemic, and it will continue to grow in the next few years.

Other data showed that Indonesia's internet traffic increased by 73% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020 and soared by 139% in the second quarter .

However, as Internet traffic increases, local conditions in Indonesia must also be taken into account. Indonesia has a population of approximately 272.1 million , including 175.4 million Internet users , and 160 million active social media users .

It can be seen that Indonesia has a large population base and considerable digital usage.

In 2020, the number of e-commerce service users in Indonesia reached 6.736 million, including mobile customers , Internet users, and active users of social media.

The benefits of e-commerce transactions are not limited to profits, but also include a wide market scope , less infrastructure , less budget expenditure, more affordable prices , lower costs, and no time constraints. Sellers do not even need to have their own inventory of goods, which makes it easier to manage transactions and deliveries, understand customer habits and can work from anywhere.

In addition to the pandemic factor, e-commerce in Indonesia has become popular among consumers in the past two years due to the increase in Internet penetration and changes in shopping methods.

Looking at Indonesia ’s e-commerce market , at least nine companies dominate, including Bukalapak, Shopee , Lazada , Gojek, Blibli, e-City, OLX, Tokopedia and Kaskus.

Moreover, the existence of e-commerce will definitely bring benefits to the entire society . These benefits are not limited to buyers and sellers. Generally, manufacturers, sellers and the wider community can even gain more advantages by using e-commerce.

As we head into 2021 , some experts expect Indonesian e-commerce to grow at a faster pace. After all, the large number of digital service users has proven the rapid growth of e-commerce in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic.
