According to foreign media reports, the head of Amazon UK said that the demand for refurbished and second-hand items among British and European consumers has created a business of more than 1 billion pounds (about 1.3 billion US dollars) for Amazon.
Most retailers and manufacturers agree that as prices rise and borrowing costs increase, consumers will continue to look for more frugal and sustainable ways to spend.
Amazon sold more than 4 million second-hand and refurbished items in the UK alone last year, said John Boumphrey , Amazon's UK country manager . He added that in the first nine months of this year, Amazon's sales of second-hand items in the UK increased by more than 15% year-on-year.
John Boumphrey said at the recent launch of the UK's " Second Chance Store " that customers buy second-hand goods to save money amid the continued rise in living costs, and also hope to shop more sustainably. It is reported that " Second Chance Store " is a Christmas pop-up store in London that sells returned and second-hand refurbished items. Amazon reportedly aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2040. But many environmental campaigners are skeptical of this goal, believing it is just a public relations exercise for the large company. However, Amazon believes that it is precisely because of its large size that it is able to make contributions to the environment.
However, John Boumphrey also revealed in a recent media interview that Amazon is frustrated with regulatory changes in Europe, especially the UK, and emphasized concerns about the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill . The bill is currently being reviewed by the UK Parliament. If passed, the bill will give the UK antitrust regulator the legal right to tailor restrictive rules for large companies.
It is reported that Amazon has invested 56 billion pounds in the UK since 2010, including 12 billion pounds in 2022 alone. Amazon Europe Second-hand business |
