Meikeduo removes 7.5 million counterfeit products from shelves, with electronic products being the hardest hit

Piracy and counterfeiting are one of the biggest challenges facing brands, and these problems also exist on e-commerce platforms . Mercado   Libre said it is actively working to avoid this situation through various initiatives .

The e-commerce platform recently announced that from January 1 to December 13 this year , it removed more than 7.5 million products from its platform that did not comply with its terms and conditions .

According to Mercado   Juan, Senior Manager of Brand Protection at Libre   Cichero said that of the products that were removed from the shelves, 2.5 million products were sold on the Mexican site . In addition, there were about 1 million products that were complained about by consumers during the same period , of which 60 % were sold on the Brazilian site , 16% were sold on the Mexican site , and 7% were sold on the Argentinian site .

The product sectors most affected are clothing and footwear, fashion, beauty, sunglasses and electronics, especially accessories such as batteries, chargers and phone cases. " The problem products are concentrated in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, and then in other countries . " Juan   Cichero said .

Juan   Cichero said they have been taking action to reduce piracy and counterfeiting on e-commerce platforms for years. For example, they have a brand protection program that companies or brands selling on the Meikeduo platform can join for free and report items sold on the platform that may infringe their rights . " The more complaints we receive, the more leads we have to help review the products. "Juan   Cichero said.

In addition, Mercado   Libre has different AI models and machine learning algorithms to detect goods that may infringe trademark rights . For example, the company currently has a language recognition system that can identify keywords that may be counterfeit or pirated sales, such as identifying similar words for brands and trademarks , or product prices that do not match brand products.

Previously, Meikeduo has announced cooperation with Levi's, Pink, Tommy   Brands such as Hilfiger , Under Armour, and Victoria's Secret have established an anti-piracy alliance. Through the alliance of platform and brand cooperation, the sale of counterfeit products in the e-commerce ecosystem is combated.
