Target to reduce seasonal hiring

According to foreign media reports, Target is taking a different approach to staffing in preparation for the upcoming peak season. This time, Target will reduce the number of seasonal hires and provide more working hours to existing employees, allowing them to receive more pay.

According to reports, Target currently has about 350,000 employees in its stores. If the number of seasonal employees is reduced, these 350,000 employees will work 5 million more hours during the holidays, and Target will pay more than $75 million in additional compensation for this. As for why such an adjustment was made, Target's own explanation was that employees had expressed the hope of increasing working hours.

The report also said that this summer Target launched an app to meet the needs of employees for flexible work. The app allows employees to choose or swap work hours as needed, making it easier to hand over shifts, and also includes other features such as taking college courses.

Many retailers , including Target, are preparing for the peak season and are hiring aggressively. Retail sales in November and December are expected to increase by at least 7 percentage points year-on-year, according to three different forecasts from Bain & Co. Deloitte and Mastercard SpendingPulse.

However, industry analysts say that as supply chain challenges caused by the epidemic spread around the world, there will be more transactions, out-of-stock and shipping delays, and staffing has become a key challenge. According to a survey of 176 US retailers conducted by talent consulting firm Korn Ferry earlier this month, 98% of respondents said they faced recruitment difficulties. If there is a shortage of employees, retailers will face terrible situations such as unstocked shelves, messy stores, longer checkout times, etc.

In addition to meeting employees' needs for increased working hours, Target has also launched a debt-free education assistance program that covers college tuition. The program has the same purpose as companies such as Amazon and Walmart, which hope to increase employee benefits and retain talent through the program.

It is reported that the number of employees recruited this seasonally is about 100,000 , which is a significant decrease from the 130,000 in the past two holidays .
