BigCommerce & PayPal: New consumption trends in the post-epidemic era

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in the consumption patterns of consumers around the world, and online e-commerce has ushered in new development opportunities . Recently, e-commerce platform BigCommerce and electronic payment platform PayPal released a survey research report based on this background .

“By analyzing consumer behavior data, sellers can better cater to consumers’ preferred shopping methods and ultimately increase sales .

Among the more than 3,000 consumers from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia surveyed , 62.5% of the respondents said they shop online most of the time ; nearly half of the respondents are recommended at least one new product on social media every month ; and 66.7% of the respondents have made at least one mobile payment in the past month .

The survey results show that as consumers' consumption behavior continues to shift from offline to online and mobile payment becomes more popular , sellers increasingly need to build omni-channel sales and marketing strategies, including setting up online stores and promoting on social media platforms .

"Over the years, e-commerce has gradually gained a foothold in the market. The rapid development of the Internet and digitalization has forced merchants to begin to transform , and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend ," said Greg Lisiewski, vice president of PayPal , in an interview . " Today , consumers prefer a smooth and convenient online shopping experience more than ever before. "

As consumption patterns change, people's payment methods are also changing . More and more consumers are starting to use digital wallets both online and offline . Before March 2020 , digital wallets were the preferred payment method for 28.3% of online consumers worldwide, and this figure jumped to 35.2% after March 2020 .

According to the data , 70% of consumers are more likely to spend more at stores that offer their preferred payment methods , said Mark Rosales, vice president of BigCommerce.

In addition, the results of the survey showed that 95.2% of respondents said they had made at least one online shopping since March 2020 ; 32.6% of American respondents, 29.9% of British respondents and 29.7% of Australian respondents said that the convenience of online shopping still outweighs any disadvantages ; new online consumption options such as buy online and pick up in store are becoming more attractive ; the vast majority of respondents said they expect sellers to provide more digital payment options.

Mid-market merchants are beginning to adopt the Pay Now payment method in their online marketplaces , with 48% of merchants in Australia, 20% in the United States and 11% in the United Kingdom currently offering this option to their customers .
