Amazon said on Monday that the popularity of its fall Prime event "exceeded" last year's event as bargain-hungry consumers began shopping ahead of the holidays.
The 48-hour event, called Prime Big Deal Days, marks the second year Amazon has held such shopping events, a fall follow-up to the company 's Prime Day promotions in July.
“Prime Big Deal Days was a great start to the holiday shopping season, providing Prime members with an exclusive opportunity to save money that exceeded our expectations, ” Doug Herrington, CEO of Global Amazon Stores , said in a statement.
Amazon said Prime members, who pay $139 a year for fast shipping and other benefits, ordered more than 150 million items from third-party sellers, up from about 100 million in 2022. But the company disclosed little other information about its performance, such as sales figures.
Amazon said shoppers snapped up Apple AirPods Pro, Bissell carpet cleaners and Crest 3D Whitestrips during the event , as well as Amazon-branded devices such as Fire TVs and Echo smart speakers.
The average spending per order during Prime Big Deal Days was $53.47, according to market research firm Numerator , which is lower than Amazon 's Prime Day promotion in July but slightly higher than last fall's promotion.
The data also showed that about 60% of the items were priced below $20, and only 4% were priced above $100, indicating that consumers are reluctant to buy big-ticket items.
In recent years, Amazon, Walmart, Target and many other big retailers have begun offering discounts ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to stretch demand out into the holiday season.
Online spending in the U.S. for the entire holiday season is expected to grow 4.8% to $221.8 billion this year, according to Adobe, which would mark an increase from last year's 3.5% increase. But that would still be a slowdown from the pandemic-era surge in 2020, when online sales in the U.S. soared by about 32%. Amazon Promotions Prime Big Deal Days |
