Sales increased by 248%! Americans flocked to Amazon to buy air conditioners for the summer

According to U.S. media reports on July 19, Phoenix, Arizona, the United States has recently experienced extreme high temperatures, with the temperature reaching at least 110 degrees Fahrenheit (about 43.3 degrees Celsius) for 19 consecutive days.

As of July 16, 14 states in the United States have issued high temperature warnings. The National Weather Service predicts that the hot weather in the southwest of the country will continue for at least a week, and more than 80 million American residents will experience temperatures above 105 degrees Fahrenheit (about 40.5 degrees Celsius).

The extremely hot weather has forced Americans to resort to cooling and refreshing products such as air conditioners, ice makers, and pool floats to get through the heat.

According to data released by Jungle Scout ( Amazon seller data and analysis platform ) , sales of air conditioners on Amazon increased by 248% in the 30 days ending July 14.

In addition to air conditioners, sales of fans also increased by 60%, while searches for "single room AC units" and " portable misting fans" also soared by triple digits.

On Wednesday morning (US time), car windshield visors became the best-selling product on Amazon's auto page.

Lightweight and cool sheets are best-selling products in Amazon's Home and Kitchen category, while floating water beds are among the top products in Amazon's Toys and Play category.

The items are the latest examples of how climate change and extreme weather patterns are affecting consumer purchases.

In addition, according to Circana data , because the air quality on the East Coast reached the worst record ever, air purifier sales last month increased by 96% year-on-year (June 2022). In the northeastern United States, which was severely affected by the Canadian wildfires, air purifier sales increased by 119%.

In addition to product sales, extreme high temperatures have also increased the financial burden on American families.

The cost of household energy bills in the U.S. will increase 11.7 percent this summer, from $517 last year to $578, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association .

In areas including Texas and Louisiana , which are experiencing their hottest summers on record , bill costs in those cities are expected to rise to $706, up 10% from last year.

The association called on Congress to provide an additional $30 in cooling aid this summer , which would help about 6 million American households, and asked utilities to keep power on this summer for households that are temporarily unable to pay their bills.
