Amazon continues to crack down on fake reviews, sellers may suffer

Whether fake reviews are fabricated, biased, or don’t truly reflect the customer’s experience or opinion, they can cause problems for both consumers who purchase products and sellers who sell products on Amazon’s platform.

For consumers, they rely on product reviews when making purchasing decisions. For sellers, they also affect the seller's sales and rankings, as well as the "buy cart" position that all sellers dream of.

Against this backdrop, Amazon filed a lawsuit against NicedisCount.net, a well-known fake review website, accusing it of violating Washington State Consumer Protection Law and unjust enrichment.

Amazon said the website not only deceived consumers, but also harmed the Amazon platform and its valuable partners - third-party sellers.

As Amazon calls it, NicedisCount is a “product tester club” that provides monetary compensation to users in the form of kickbacks on product purchases to entice them to leave fake reviews and other false content on Amazon.

The most disturbing thing is that it bypasses one of Amazon's fake review protection mechanisms , "verified customer reviews." On Amazon, buyers of a product can review the product. As long as the reviewer has purchased or used the product and paid a price acceptable to most shoppers, they can be certified by Amazon.

In its complaint, Amazon said that unidentified Amazon sellers would list their products on NicedisCount's website and promote them through the website. If someone placed an order and left a review, the seller would pay a certain fee directly to the reviewer through PayPal.

If the reviewer writes a negative review, the buyer will ask the buyer to change it to a positive review, otherwise they will not transfer the money.

Although the site has now been shut down, Amazon said the people behind it may continue to operate similar sites. Prior to this, Amazon had filed a lawsuit against a Facebook group with more than 10,000 members that was known to post fake reviews on Amazon.

As Amazon continues to crack down on fake reviews on the site, businesses and brands selling on Amazon must also remain vigilant and pay attention to the content on their listings and related products that may infringe on intellectual property rights.
