Amazon UK warehouse workers' first strike vote fails

Amazon UK warehouse workers' first strike vote fails

According to foreign media reports, the first strike vote launched by Amazon warehouse workers in the UK failed to reach the legal threshold for a formal strike , and the e-commerce giant should be able to breathe a sigh of relief for the time being.

British law requires at least 50% of voting members to support a strike for the ballot to be valid . According to the GMB union, the strike vote failed by just three votes .

Amazon , on the other hand , said it had increased base pay for its employees and provided a "comprehensive benefits package" for staff at its Coventry warehouse .

Earlier this year, some workers at the Lyons Park warehouse took part in an informal protest over the "insulting" pay they received from Amazon .

Amanda Gilling, of the GMB union, said: "Amazon workers are furious about this . They will continue to fight for a £15 an hour wage and this is just the beginning . "

Amanda Gilling added : " The union is now speaking to workers at the warehouse and discussing how we can continue to move this fight forward. "

The union said it had long been seeking official recognition from Amazon and was committed to improving its health and safety practices , a move that was backed by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on Thursday.

Addressing delegates at the TUC conference in Brighton , Starmer said the online retailer should have a "unionised workforce".

Amazon believes that the minimum hourly wage for its warehouse workers is between £ 10.50 and £ 11.45 , which means that " the minimum hourly wage paid by Amazon to its employees has increased by nearly 29% since 2018. "

In addition, Amazon also provides employees with comprehensive benefits worth thousands of dollars, including private medical insurance, life insurance, meal subsidies and employee discounts .

Amazon also said that temporary staff hired during the holiday season will soon receive a one-off subsidy of up to 500 pounds as the company's way of thanking its hard-working employees .

Across the ocean in the United States, Amazon labor groups have also suffered setbacks. It is reported that a vote to join a union at a warehouse in New York State also ended in failure. It seems that Amazon employees do not want to make things too awkward with their employer.

As the holiday season approaches, Amazon naturally does not want more unexpected situations to occur, and it is also necessary to keep the warehouses operating normally. This is good news for cross-border sellers, as it can ensure that products are delivered on time.
