Although Amazon strictly prohibits infringement, pirated and counterfeit products are not uncommon on the platform, and many people make a quick buck by taking the risk of being reported and removed from the shelves. Recently, foreign media reported a case in which Amazon was sued for selling pirated books.
According to the original author, pirated copies of his eight books were found on Amazon. These pirated copies were advertised as works published in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which made them appear to have hundreds of years of history. Not only that, the prices were also much higher than the originals.
In the lawsuit, one of the books priced at $15 was sold by three third-party sellers. The version was marked as 1602, and the price ranged from $907 to $987 . One of the books was priced the most outrageously, with a book originally worth $7 being sold for $1,008, a premium of more than 100 times. The author said that when the seller claimed to have the 1602 version that sold for $1,000 , it was not only a plagiarism of his labor, but also a slander that implied that he was suspected of plagiarism.
Moreover, in the lawsuit against Amazon, the author also mentioned that he reported the matter to Amazon as early as April, but Amazon did not start to remove these pirated products until he formally filed the lawsuit in August. He believes that Amazon has violated the publishing service agreement, and the lawsuit requires Amazon to prohibit third-party sellers from selling counterfeit products, and hopes to receive appropriate financial compensation.
But Amazon denied all the allegations and later said, "We don't allow this to happen and are working to correct it. Third-party sellers on the platform seem to have sold only a small portion of these books. We have no evidence that any of them are counterfeit. We are investigating the cause of the matter."
Amazon started out as a book company, but this is not the first time that pirated books have appeared on the platform. Some time ago, a book published by a university professor was counterfeited, and the author part of the cover was only simply photoshopped. Although Amazon was contacted about this, it was not immediately removed from the shelves.
Although Amazon will respond to feedback, it is not easy to get an effective solution. It seems that when necessary, legal means must be used to protect one's legitimate rights and interests. Amazon Piracy Prosecution |
