Online commodity prices hit record highs
Various holiday discounts during the holidays caused the average price of online goods in the United States in November to drop by 2% from the previous month , but prices are still higher compared to the same period last year . This is the 18th consecutive month of year-on-year growth in online commodity prices in the United States . According to the Adobe Digital Economy Index ( DEI ) data for November 2021, online commodity prices rose by 3.5% compared to last year , setting a record high .
Adobe analyzed 18 online product categories and more than 100 million SKUs. The analysis showed that in November 2021, prices in 11 of the 18 online product categories increased year-on-year . In addition, data analysis company Profitero investigated the prices of Amazon's 1,600 most popular products in October 2020 and October 2021. It was found that the average price of these products increased by 7.5% during this period.

Clothing prices increased the most, and comfortable shoes were popular
Clothing is the category with the highest price increase , up 17.3% year-on-year and down only 0.4% month-on-month, breaking the previous record . In the past eight months , the online price of clothing has increased by more than 9% year-on-year every month . The price of home and decoration categories increased by 6.93 % ; sporting goods increased by 6.75%; and electrical appliances increased by 4% .
Adobe reported that U.S. online shoppers received 3 billion out-of-stock messages in November, up from 2 billion in October. “ Ongoing supply chain constraints and increased consumer demand have led to high inflation in e-commerce, with apparel seeing a high number of out-of-stock messages compared to other categories . ”
Nearly a third of fourth-quarter apparel sales in the U.S. are expected to come from comfort categories such as sweatshirts, sweatpants, pajamas and socks, NPD reports . In the women’s denim and sweatpants categories, loose-fitting styles are increasing in sales , while skinny styles are losing share .
Interestingly, in the U.S. footwear category, comfort items have evolved from slippers and boots to include sandals, clogs and even sneakers.
